Trim Tabs and Their Functionality

Flight control surfaces are standard aerodynamic devices found on countless aircraft, allowing for a pilot to govern flight attitude with ease. Main and secondary control surfaces are used for most management, coming in the form of ailerons, rudders, elevators, flaps, slats, and other devices that deflect the air stream. Control trimming surfaces, or trim tabs, meanwhile, are surfaces that counteract the aerodynamic forces exerted on control surfaces.. With their use, pilots may carry out changes while exerting less force on controls.

Without the presence of trim tabs, any adjustment of a flight surface would require a pilot to overcome aerodynamic forces with their own strength. As high-altitude winds and pressure act against the aircraft, a large amount of exertion would be needed to keep the yoke steady during flight. These forces also increase the larger the aircraft and the bigger its surfaces are, thus trim tabs are crucial for reducing acting forces that are exerted on the airplane during flight. Alongside making the aircraft yoke easier to hold steady, trim tabs also serve to mitigate premature wear and tear. As the winds and pressure of high altitude flight raise stress on all parts of the aircraft, constant exposure can expedite the rate at which parts wear down. Over time, this can quickly lead to a part failure much earlier than should be expected.

Trim tabs are regularly found on the trailing edge of a larger primary control surface, and they may either be fixed or adjustable. Adjustable tabs are almost exclusively used to adjust control loading and the pitch axis, though they also serve to assist with yaw and roll. Managing the adjustable trim tabs of an aircraft is fairly simple, and controls are provided to the pilot from within the cockpit. With various controls to manage different tabs, pilots can adjust the aircraft’s trim at any time to counteract forces that may destabilize the airplane. With the trim lever, as an example, the elevator aircraft trim may be deflected left or right with ease. With deflection of airflow, the forces that are acting against the surface are alleviated.

Fixed trim tabs, on the other hand, are typically placed on the rudder or aileron of a single engine aircraft. Generally, the fixed tab will have been bent and angled before the flight while on the ground, and they benefit aircraft by allowing them to overcome undesirable roll or yaw. As fixed trim tabs are only adjustable while one is on the ground, it is important that they are set to a position that is needed for the flight and are adjusted carefully so as to not damage surfaces.

While trim tabs are very common to aircraft, they may also be found in other various applications. In marine applications, trim tabs are often situated near the lower edges of a boat motor. Similar to their use in aviation, marine trim tabs can be used to manage pitch control as forces act against the boat. As such, their use can allow for a captain to control heading with ease.
